What to eat when in Amsterdam

Be sure to try stroopwafels, herring with onions, pancakes and poffertjes, bitterballen, and freshly made fries with mayonnaise to truly taste the city.

Stroopwafels

In Amsterdam, eating a warm stroopwafel fresh from the market is a must. The thin waffle layers filled with gooey caramel are best enjoyed while strolling along the canals. It’s a simple treat, but one that perfectly captures the city’s cozy charm.

Herring with onions

Trying herring with onions in Amsterdam is a true local experience. The fresh, lightly salted fish is traditionally eaten with chopped onions and pickles, often right at a street stand. It may seem bold at first, but it’s a classic taste of Dutch culture.

Pancakes and poffertjes

Dutch pancakes and poffertjes are a must-try when visiting Amsterdam. The pancakes are thin and savory or sweet, while poffertjes are small, fluffy, and topped with butter and powdered sugar. Both are perfect comfort food after a day of exploring the city.
